E.ON Expands Sweden Grid with New High-Voltage Substation in Norrköping

23 Apr 2026

Energy company E.ON is set to develop a new substation in Norrköping, Sweden, as part of its long-term strategy to modernise and strengthen regional electricity infrastructure.

The planned Sylten substation will replace older facilities and is designed to improve grid reliability, efficiency, and long-term capacity in the region. The project forms part of E.ON’s broader investment programme aimed at supporting future electricity demand and enabling the energy transition.

The new installation will include two buildings housing modern grid equipment, with all technical systems placed indoors to enhance operational performance and adapt to the surrounding urban environment.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2026, with the substation expected to be completed by 2029.

As part of the project delivery, Assemblin has been selected as the contractor under a turnkey agreement, responsible for electrical, high-voltage, and ventilation installations. The contract is valued at more than SEK 150 million.

The project places strong emphasis on creating a future-proof and high-reliability facility, aligning with growing demands on the electricity network driven by electrification, urban development, and renewable energy integration.

Commenting on the collaboration, Jonas Klarén, CEO of Assemblin Electrical, said:
“This is a significant project for the region's energy supply and we are very proud that E.ON has chosen Assemblin as a partner. Our experts in Power (high voltage) have extensive experience in complex construction projects where quality, coordination and stable implementation are crucial.”

From E.ON, Jonas Hansson emphasised the importance of project delivery:
“For us, it is important to have a partner who can contribute both technical expertise and reliable cooperation throughout the entire process. Assemblin has shown that they can handle large and complex projects with high quality, and we look forward to a good implementation.”

Substations are critical components of modern power systems, enabling voltage transformation, load balancing, and efficient electricity distribution. Investments such as the Sylten substation are increasingly important as utilities expand and upgrade networks to accommodate higher electricity demand and a growing share of renewable energy.

The project highlights a broader trend across Europe, where utilities like E.ON are accelerating grid modernisation efforts, with substations playing a central role in ensuring resilient and future-ready energy systems.
