E-Distribuzione Enhances Campania’s Grid with Advanced Transformers

9 Dec 2024
E-Distribuzione, a subsidiary of the Enel Group, has successfully completed a significant smart grids project in Campania, Italy, focusing on advanced digitalisation and enhanced transformer technology. This initiative, part of the PON Project (National Operational Program for Enterprises and Competitiveness 2014-2020), aims to strengthen energy networks in the municipality and province of Avellino, improving renewable energy integration and operational resilience.

Central to the project was the expansion of the Avellino Nord primary cabin, which now houses a powerful 40MVA three-phase transformer. This transformer converts high-voltage electricity to medium voltage, critical for efficient local distribution. Its installation required the medium voltage electrical panel to be upgraded, increasing energy transport capacity and enhancing grid performance.

The addition of latest-generation electronic protection and control systems equips the network with Smart Grid capabilities, allowing for real-time fault detection and advanced automation. These systems include Smart Fault Selection (SFS), which improves fault isolation and enhances operational flexibility across the grid.

To support these upgrades, new digital communication devices and intelligent meters were deployed across primary and secondary transformation cabins, along with satellite centres. Five new connection lines, spanning 23.7km, were built from the Avellino Nord cabin, with an additional 0.6km line reinforcement.

These advancements align with E-Distribuzione's broader strategy to digitalise and decentralise Italy's electricity grid, accommodating the increasing demand for renewable energy sources.,
