DOE Suggests New Distribution Transformer Efficiency Standards

29 Mar 2023

US -  Improve the stability of the US power grid

The US Department of Energy has announced a plan to improve the stability of the US power grid, reduce utility bills, and significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the country. The plan proposes new energy efficiency standards for three categories, including distribution transformers, with the aim of diversifying transformer core technology to save energy and reduce costs. If adopted within the DOE's proposed timeframe, the new rule will take effect in 2027, and is expected to reduce US carbon emissions by 340 million tons over 30 years, and save the country about $15 billion from 30 years of supply. The government is also working to strengthen domestic manufacturing of key components, such as steel, and provide guidance on implementing rebate programs to encourage the replacement of energy inefficient transformers.
