Correction: Ampcontrol partners with MIDEL to upgrade transformer infrastructure in Australia

2 Dec 2019

In reaction to the press release from Ampcontrol and MIDEL announcing the agreement between the two companies to serve the Australian market with transformer retrofill options that are firesafe and environmentally friendly, Molekulis Pty Ltd, Australian distributor of various mineral oils including mineral transformer oils, issued a statement correcting the false statement made by the press release that mineral oils are flammable or toxic.

Molekulis stated: "While mineral transformer oil is combustible (as are esters) mineral transformer oil is not categorized as flammable under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods code nor any other applicable legislation."

"Most transformer mineral oils meet the aspiration hazard category 1 threshold when ingested through the respiratory system by humans. This is due to the viscosity of the oils being <20.5mm2/s at 40°C, not toxicity. While some mineral transformer oils containing additives such as anti-oxidants are harmful to aquatic life, they are not categorized as toxic," the statement said.
