Convoy Delivers 171-Tonne Transformer to New England Solar Battery Site

11 Apr 2025
A major logistical milestone is underway for the New England Solar and Battery Project, as a 171-tonne transformer travels through regional New South Wales this weekend en route to the project site.

The 60-metre-long convoy, made up of three connected prime movers and an 18-axle trailer with an independent steering system, began its seven-day, 1,000-kilometre journey from the Port of Brisbane on Monday.

The transport route takes the convoy through Tamworth and Uralla, including a challenging climb up the Moonbi Range, where it will be assisted by two additional prime movers.

The transformer is a critical component of the 400-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system (BESS), enabling safe energy transfer between the battery system and the national grid. It will be installed on a dedicated transformer bay for final electrical and commissioning works.

New England Solar Project Manager Sarah Donnan acknowledged the potential for minor delays during transport and thanked drivers for their patience and caution.

The BESS is designed to store excess energy and release it when demand rises, playing a key role in the region's energy resilience and transition to renewables. The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in 2026.
