ConEd to Boost Grid Capacity With 28 New Substations
Con Edison (ConEd) plans to place 28 new substations into service by 2035 across the territories of its two electric utilities, Consolidated Edison Company of New York (CECONY) and Orange & Rockland Utilities (O&R). The expansion is part of a planned $37.2 billion investment in the companies’ electricity distribution networks.
ConEd previously planned 22 new substations, making the latest target an increase of six. The investment comes as electricity demand grows across New York, driven by building electrification, transportation and new commercial developments.
CECONY and O&R reported combined electricity sales revenue of $3.13 billion in the second quarter of 2026, up from $2.78 billion in the same period a year earlier. Together, the utilities provide electricity to more than 9 million people across New York City, parts of downstate New York and northern New Jersey.
In CECONY’s service area, new buildings are requesting up to 25% more electric load than older buildings. The utility is also preparing to serve additional demand from projects including upgrades at John F. Kennedy International Airport, a new Major League Soccer stadium and entertainment complex in Queens, and developments in the Hunts Point area of the Bronx.
The company said its investment will also strengthen grid reliability and resilience, including preparations for extreme heat, while supporting New York’s clean-energy transition.
CECONY and O&R are also supporting the electrification of more than 570 heavy-duty electric trucks and buses through their programs.
