Con Edison Invests $3.9 Billion in Grid Upgrades Ahead of Summer 2026
Con Edison announced plans to invest $3.9 billion in electric system upgrades across New York City and Westchester County as the utility prepares for higher summer electricity demand and more frequent extreme heat events.
The upgrades include new underground and overhead transformers, additional cable infrastructure, substation improvements, and grid modernization technologies aimed at improving reliability across the company’s service territory.
According to the utility, the investments are intended to address growing energy demand driven by increased air-conditioning use during hotter summers. Research conducted by Con Edison and Columbia University projects that New York could experience 17 days annually above 95 degrees by 2030, compared with four historically.
“Our ongoing investments help deliver safe, reliable service, even as summers grow hotter and the demand for power increases,” said Matthew Ketschke, president of Con Edison. “We build advanced technology into our grid to increase efficiency and capacity.”
The company said improvements are being made across all five boroughs and Westchester County, including new transmission infrastructure in Queens, additional cable installations in Brooklyn, and underground system upgrades in Manhattan and the Bronx.
Con Edison also outlined several customer programs focused on energy efficiency, affordability assistance, and bill management ahead of the summer season. The utility forecasts that peak electricity demand could surpass 2025 levels, with system demand projected to reach 12,690 megawatts under peak conditions.
The utility serves approximately 3.7 million customers across New York City and Westchester County.
