Collett & Sons Completes Transformer Delivery to New Cumnock Substation
Collett & Sons Ltd, a UK logistics company, has completed the delivery and installation of three transformers at New Cumnock Substation in East Ayrshire, Scotland. The project was carried out in partnership with transformer manufacturer Kolektor and involved multiple stages of transport and installation.
The transformers, two weighing 170 tonnes and one 121 tonnes, were first received at ABP's Port of Ayr directly from a vessel. Collett & Sons used a jacking and skidding system to safely offload the units onto modular flat-top trailers for temporary storage.
Two years later, the transformers were transported 33 miles on a 550-tonne Scheuerle girder bridge trailer to a transhipment site at North Kyle Wind Farm, before being moved to the substation over a restricted access route using 14-axle modular flat-top trailers. The final installation at the substation involved precise jacking and skidding operations, including a 28-metre skid with rotation for the first transformer.
In addition to the main units, ancillary components were transported from Slovenia and positioned using a mobile crane under CPA Contract Lift conditions. Each transformer unit took nine consecutive days to assemble.
The project included detailed planning such as traffic management, route surveys, swept path analysis, and police coordination, ensuring public safety and regulatory compliance throughout the transport and installation phases.
