CIGRE Launches Working Group on Transformer Moisture Monitoring for Ageing Assessment

5 Sep 2024

CIGRE has announced the creation of a new Joint Working Group (JWG A2/D1.74) focused on Online Moisture Monitoring of Transformers for Ageing Assessment, aimed at enhancing transformer performance and longevity. Convened by Senja Leivo of Vaisala, the group will explore real-time moisture monitoring technology to support the energy sector's digitalization efforts.

Key objectives include collecting and analyzing field data from moisture sensors, investigating moisture migration within insulation systems, and studying its effects on insulation ageing and dielectric strength. This initiative will enable transformer operators to assess risks, optimize load management, and prevent potential failures.

As the energy sector transitions toward sustainability and digitalization, the group will establish guidelines for moisture sensor installation and use, advancing industry standards and improving asset management.

Leivo, an expert in transformer diagnostics, emphasized the potential of this work to drive digitalization in the energy industry.

The working group is seeking experts in moisture monitoring and dynamics to contribute.

Interested professionals are encouraged to contact their National CIGRE Committee or reach out directly to Leivo. The project begins in 2025, with deliverables expected by 2028.
