China’s Transformer Output Exceeds $43.5 Billion in 2025, According to New Data from the China Machinery Industry Federation
China’s transformer manufacturing industry surpassed $43.5 billion (300 billion yuan) in output in 2025, reinforcing its position as the world’s leading producer, according to new data from the China Machinery Industry Federation.
The sector now accounts for more than half of global production capacity, highlighting China’s growing dominance in critical power infrastructure manufacturing. Industry officials say the focus has shifted in recent years from expanding capacity to improving quality, efficiency, and technological capability.
Luo Junjie, executive vice president of the federation, emphasized that transformers remain a backbone of modern electrical systems. He noted ongoing advancements in energy-efficient technologies, including silicon steel and amorphous alloy transformers, which reduce energy loss and improve performance.
China is also seeing the rise of large-scale, globally competitive manufacturers, reflecting broader consolidation and modernization within the industry.
Looking ahead, policymakers are prioritizing technological innovation and digital integration, aiming to overcome material constraints and enable smarter, more efficient transformer systems.
Under a government-led implementation plan from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China aims for energy-efficient transformers to account for more than 75% of new installations by 2028. Additionally, 15% of existing units are expected to be upgraded to higher-efficiency models.
