China commissions ABB’s converter transformers for Shanbei-Wuhan UHVDC link

30 Jan 2020

The State Grid Corp. of China (SGCC) has commissioned high-voltage equipment for its 800-kV, ultrahigh-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission link in China's Shaanxi and Hubei provinces, in the Northwest and Central regions of the country.

The equipment for the project was supplied by ABB and included converter transformers, breakers and capacitor banks.

The 1,100-km (683.5-mile) long Shanbei-Wuhan link will transport up to 8,000 MW of electricity, enough to meet the needs of around eight million people in China.

The link will be among the world's most powerful and is an important step for the SGCC in developing global UHVDC systems standards.
