Enemalta's investment in the Buġibba Distribution Centre is set to increase the centre's capacity by 50% with the installation of a new transformer. The project, expected to be completed by the end of the month, will enhance electricity services for approximately 25,000 consumers in Qawra, St Paul's Bay, and Buġibba.

The Buġibba Distribution Centre, which connects to multiple substations, is a key part of the region's electricity distribution network. During a site visit, Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and Enemalta executive chairperson Ing. Ryan Fava commended the engineers and technicians for their dedication.

"The energy demand in this area is on the rise, particularly during the summer months," Minister Dalli noted. "As part of the reinforcement works that Enemalta is carrying out across Malta and Gozo, we have also scheduled the strengthening of this area. The installation of an additional transformer translates into both increased capacity and greater resilience as demand increases."

Fava explained that the new power transformer has a 30MVA capacity, which will improve the distribution of electricity, especially during peak demand periods. Enemalta will also extend the remote operation and monitoring capabilities for the new transformer, allowing engineers to control it from their control room in Marsa.

In addition to the Buġibba project, Enemalta is developing new distribution centres in Naxxar and Siġġiewi, currently in advanced procurement and planning stages. They have also issued a call to upgrade the Msida distribution centre with new switchgear, transformers, and other equipment, and are planning to extend the St. Andrew's distribution centre in Pembroke.

Moreover, in a project launched in December, Enemalta has laid over 70km of new underground cables across various localities. This initiative aims to create new alternative connections, reducing network disruptions and enabling quicker restoration of services when issues arise.
