BRUSH Group Completes Complex Urban 132kV Transformer Installation in Birmingham
BRUSH Group has completed the installation of a 132kV transformer at the Cheapside substation in Birmingham, delivering a key upgrade to the city’s electricity network in a constrained urban environment.
The project involved the installation of a 132kV–11kV power transformer at a site with limited access, requiring a tailored logistics and engineering approach. Due to restricted entry via a narrow corridor, engineers adapted the transport and installation method to enable safe delivery and positioning of the equipment.
To overcome these constraints, BRUSH engineers split the transformer and associated cooling banks into two transportable units, reducing transport height and simplifying on-site assembly. The operation involved close coordination with specialist contractors, precision lifting activities, and scheduled weekend work to minimise disruption.
Commenting on the project, Transformer Services Manager Justin Johnson of BRUSH Group said:
“The Cheapside project is another fine example of what BRUSH does best. We are known for taking on those jobs that require real engineering innovation and hands-on skills.”
He added:
“It isn’t easy transporting a 132kV transformer unit of this size into a tight urban centre space but, thanks to our team thinking ‘outside-of-the-box’, we were able to bring it to fruition with precision.”
The installation strengthens the resilience and capacity of Birmingham’s power infrastructure, supporting continued development of the local electricity distribution network.
