BRAZIL - The Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) estimates that transmission auctions planned for 2022 will attract a total investment of $1.98 billion, up 160% from 2021.

The projected capex is also 35% higher than 2020 and represents a jump of 124% from 2019, according to data from sector regulator Aneel. 

The first auction, in June, will offer a total of 4,810 km of transmission lines, 6,030 MVA of transformation capacity to be installed, and is expected to generate around $1.5 billion in investments.

The largest works will be for the expansion of transmission capacity in the northern region of the Stete of Minas Gerais, where 3,543 km of lines and 3,750 MVA in substations are planned, with an investment of around $1.1 billion.

The auction may also include transmission projects whose concession contracts are in the process of forfeiture, in the states of Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Mato Grosso do Sul and Santa Catarina. They total 94 km of lines, 1,030 MVA and about $222 million in capex.

One of the auction's highlights is the project to increase energy security in Amapá state, with an investment of around $37 million reais to build 250 km of lines.

Also included are expansion and reinforcement works for the electric energy services of São Paulo, Pará, Sergipe and Acre, which represent an increase of 1,25 0MVA in substations.

The details of the second auction have not yet been released by MME. Among the potential projects are lines designed to serve new wind power generation parks in the northeast region, including a direct current bipole transmission line between Graça Aranha in Maranhão state and Silvânia in Goiás, reports BNamericas.
