BC Hydro Expands Clayburn Substation to Meet Fraser Valley Growth
BC Hydro has announced a major expansion of its Clayburn Substation in Abbotsford to meet growing electricity demand across the Fraser Valley. The upgrade will increase the substation's capacity by 50 percent, enabling it to serve up to 35,000 additional homes and improve reliability for thousands of businesses and residences.
The project includes the installation of a new transformer and equipment to connect 10 additional feeders. Construction is scheduled to begin at the end of September 2025, with completion expected by 2028. The expansion is part of BC Hydro's $36 billion capital plan, which also includes upgrades to the Mount Lehman and Atchelitz substations, reinforcement of transmission lines, and improvements at Wahleach, Ruskin, and Stave Falls facilities.
The investment comes as the Fraser Valley experiences rapid population growth and increasing electrification in residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural sectors. BC Hydro currently operates 13 substations in the region, serving approximately 120,000 customers, with the population projected to exceed 500,000 by 2050.
To support faster and more affordable connections for new homes and businesses, BC Hydro recently updated its Distribution Extension Policy, reducing costs for developers and homeowners and streamlining the grid connection process.
BC Hydro emphasizes that these projects will ensure electricity remains reliable, sustainable, and affordable for communities in the Fraser Valley, supporting both current and future growth.
