The Transmission Company of Nigeria's Port Harcourt Region is sounding the alarm over the escalating interference on its transmission lines' right of way in six mandate states. This disturbing trend, coupled with the vandalization and theft of crucial equipment: transmission lines, power station, transformers and other equipment in Rivers, Imo, Abia, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, and Bayelsa states, poses a significant challenge to power transportation.
The General Manager of TCN, Port Harcourt Region, Dr. Inugonum Thomas, emphasized the critical role of the transmission sector in the power chain and underscored the need for secure transmission lines. He revealed instances of attacks on transmission lines, destruction of infrastructure, and even the perilous targeting of gas pipelines, emphasizing the constant threat of vandalization.
Dr. Thomas called on the Federal Government to deploy military personnel and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps operatives to help secure power stations, highlighting the potential dangers posed by such attacks. He recounted instances where communities obstructed projects that could benefit them and even dug graves in a bid to demand compensation.
The Assistant General Manager, Port Sub-Region, Engr Ben Ezemobi, added that the company is actively working on projects, including the installation of a 100MVA transformer, to meet the power needs of Rivers State. Despite the challenges, TCN is steadfast in its commitment to ensuring a reliable and secure power supply.
