Baltica 2 Receives 360-Tonne Transformers in Key Grid Milestone

23 Dec 2025
Four ultra-heavy 360-tonne (≈793,660 lbs) 450 MVA transformers have been delivered and positioned at the Baltica 2 onshore substation site in Osieki Lęborskie, advancing grid-connection works for the 1.5 GW offshore wind farm jointly developed by PGE and Ørsted. The transformers will step power up to transmission-level voltage for integration into Poland’s national grid.

The transformers, supplied by GE Vernova, were transported through a complex multi-stage operation involving sea transport, port handling, and overnight road movements using multi-axle trailers. Discharge at the Baltic Container Terminal was followed by a sea transfer to Władysławowo, then road transport to the inland substation, requiring detailed route surveys and coordination with local authorities.

Construction of the nearly 13-hectare onshore substation is led by a consortium of GE Vernova and Polimex Mostostal. Installation of 275 kV and 400 kV gas-insulated switchgear buildings is underway, along with busbar and gantry structures connecting the facility to the transmission network operated by PSE. Horizontal directional drilling near the coastline is ongoing to link offshore export cables while minimizing environmental impact.

Baltica 2 will feature 107 turbines and four offshore substations, with all major offshore contracts awarded and permits secured. Offshore installation is scheduled to start in 2026, with onshore substation testing and commissioning planned for 2026–2027. First power output is expected toward the end of 2027, making Baltica 2 one of the largest offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea.

The project underscores the growing complexity of onshore logistics for offshore wind and highlights the critical role of grid infrastructure in Europe’s energy transition.
