Balfour Beatty to Deliver Substation Extension in East Anglia

23 Jun 2026
Balfour Beatty has been awarded a ~ $160 million (£121 million) contract by National Grid to deliver the Bramford 400kV substation extension project in Suffolk, England. The four-year project forms part of the wider Bramford to Twinstead programme and is being delivered through National Grid’s EPC Framework under the Great Grid Upgrade.

The scope of works includes the design and installation of a substation extension that will enable the connection of four new circuits, including two new grid supply points and two shunt reactors designed to improve the reliability and efficiency of the network. The project also includes the integration of gantry structures to support overhead line connections, as well as the design, supply and installation of systems to monitor, control and protect the transmission network.

Once completed, the upgrade is expected to increase transmission capacity and strengthen network resilience across the East Anglia electricity network, supporting the wider transition to a lower-carbon energy system.

Tony Wilson, Managing Director of Balfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution business, said the award “builds on our continued work across East Anglia to strengthen and modernise the UK’s electricity network infrastructure.” He added that it reflects “the expertise of our teams, our strong delivery track record and our capability to successfully deliver complex substation projects,” noting that the company looks forward to working closely with National Grid to support increased network capacity and resilience for communities and businesses.

Work has already commenced, with completion expected in 2030. At peak, around 150 people will be employed on the project, including apprentices and graduates.
