Avangrid has recently enhanced its ability to respond to transformer outages with the acquisition of a custom-made mobile transformer from Hitachi Energy. This 168 megavolt-ampere (MVA) mobile unit is designed for quick deployment and installation at any of Avangrid's onshore wind and solar facilities, thanks to its versatile multi-voltage capabilities. This new technology allows Avangrid to restore energy production swiftly while waiting for permanent replacement equipment.

Pedro Azagra, CEO of Avangrid, expressed enthusiasm for the new addition, highlighting its role in improving the resilience and reliability of their renewable energy operations across the United States. He emphasized that reducing downtime at renewable energy sites is crucial for maintaining a steady flow of clean energy to customers, aligning with Avangrid's mission to accelerate the clean energy transition.

The mobile transformer, consisting of three modules transported by semi-trucks, represents a significant advancement in addressing transformer failures, which can otherwise halt power generation for extended periods. Steve McKinney, head of Hitachi Energy's Transformer Business in North America, underscored the importance of this partnership, noting that such innovative solutions are vital for ensuring reliable energy delivery, especially amid long lead times for new equipment in the industry.
