Austria plans $1.1b transmission network expansion

17 Apr 2019

VIENNA, AUSTRIA - Austrian network operator APG is planning to invest more than €1 billion ($1.13 billion) in three major transmission projects designed to help integrate wind capacity in the country.

One project includes building a new 380 kV Salzburg Line at $905 million to connect wind farms in the east of the country with pumped hydro storage facilities in the west, reports Wind Power Monthly.

Another $340 million will be allocated to expanding the existing network in north Austria to ensure a more decarbonised energy supply in the country's industrial heartland.

In addition, the operator will spend further $226 million in replacing the existing 15 km, 220 kV Weinviertel line with a new 380 kV link, capable of better integrating wind and solar projects in Lower Austria, the country's northeastern-most state.
