Australia Seeks Public Input on New Efficiency Standards for Distribution Transformers

14 Oct 2024
The Australian government is inviting feedback on proposed updates to energy efficiency regulations for distribution transformers. These transformers, essential for distributing electricity across the grid, operate continuously. Even minor improvements in their efficiency could result in substantial energy savings, making more electricity available for use.

The Consultation Regulation Impact Statement (CRIS) assesses options for raising the minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for distribution transformers. These transformers are already regulated under the Greenhouse Energy Minimum Standards Act, but the CRIS suggests expanding the scope of regulations and tightening efficiency requirements.

The initiative is being carried out through the Equipment Energy Efficiency (E3) Program, a collaborative effort between the Australian, state and territory governments, and the New Zealand Government. The program aims to enhance the energy efficiency of appliances and equipment.

Feedback on the proposed changes is open until December 6, 2024, and will inform future policy decisions.
