ANDRITZ has secured a contract to modernize and uprate the Leonel de Moura Brizola Hydropower Plant (also known as Jacuí) in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. This follows significant damage caused by the historic floods of May 2024. The refurbishment will increase the plant's capacity from 180 MW to approximately 230 MW, representing a 28% boost.

The project includes upgrading six generating units, refurbishing electrical and mechanical auxiliary systems, and implementing a new automation system. A key focus is the supply and installation of seven new step-up transformers to enhance electrical capacity and reliability. Additionally, the spillway, water intake structures, and powerhouse will be revitalized.

The modernization aims to improve operational efficiency, reliability, and availability. The first unit is expected to be back online within 18 months, with the entire project slated for completion in 28 months.

Denis Marin, Proposal Manager at ANDRITZ, emphasized the company's ongoing collaboration with CSN and past projects such as Passo Real and Itaúba, highlighting the importance of restoring the plant promptly to support regional energy needs.
