AMSC Acquires Comtrafo, Expands Into Brazilian Transformer Market
AMSC announced the acquisition of Comtrafo Indústria de Transformadores Elétricos S.A. (Comtrafo), a Brazilian manufacturer of utility-scale power and distribution transformers. The deal includes US$55 million in cash, 2.4 million restricted AMSC shares valued at approximately US$78 million, and the purchase of two factory properties in Brazil for US$29 million.
The acquisition positions AMSC to expand its product portfolio in utility and industrial applications, accelerate profitable growth, and enter the Brazilian market, with potential for further expansion across Latin America. Comtrafo is projected to deliver roughly US$55 million in revenue for 2025 with 30% gross margins and 20% operating margins.
Looking ahead, Comtrafo has a total backlog of US$85 million for 2026, with US$55 million expected in the next 12 months. AMSC CEO Daniel P. McGahn said the acquisition strengthens the company’s ability to meet growing utility and industrial demand and leverages Comtrafo’s leadership in Brazil’s US$1.5 billion transformer market, where government plans exceed US$20 billion in grid investment.
Founded in 1994, Comtrafo supplies high-performance transformers to utilities, industrials, telecom operators, hospitals, and construction companies throughout Brazil and Latin America. Every transformer undergoes individual testing to global standards, supported by nationwide technical support.
AMSC will hold a conference call on December 11, 2025, to discuss the acquisition and its strategic outlook.
