Ameren Upgrades Eldon Substation to Increase Capacity
Ameren Missouri is installing new equipment at its Eldon substation to increase electrical capacity and improve service reliability.
Two switchgear units were placed at the site this week, with a transformer scheduled for installation as part of the project. Switchgear controls the distribution of electricity and can help isolate faults and reroute power during outages.
The utility said the upgrades are expected to increase the substation’s capacity by about 50% and address voltage issues previously reported in the area. The facility serves approximately 2,400 customers, including residential and commercial users.
The switchgear units were manufactured by nVent, and the transformer is being produced by WEG Transformers USA, both based in Missouri. The project is part of Ameren Missouri’s broader Smart Energy Plan, which includes infrastructure upgrades across the state.
A temporary portable substation is being used during construction to maintain service. The upgraded substation is expected to be operational by the end of the year.
