AF Bygg Väst to Build Transformer Station at Port of Gothenburg

10 Jun 2025
The Port of Gothenburg has contracted AF Bygg Väst, part of AF Gruppen Sverige, to construct a new transformer station to support shore power connections for container and car/RoRo vessels. The facility will serve a total of seven berths--five at the container terminal and two at the car terminal--enabling ships to connect to shore power before 2030.

The contract, valued at SEK 129m (USD 13.4m) , covers the construction of a transformer station with a capacity of 19 MVA for incoming electrical power. Work is set to begin in the second quarter of 2025 and is expected to be completed by March 2027.

The project is partly funded by the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility with approximately SEK 90m (USD 9.4m) in support. Total investments for shore power supply (OPS) infrastructure at the terminals, including cables and switchgear, are estimated to reach SEK 600m (USD 62.6m).

Magnus Nordfeldt, Head of Business Area Cargo at the Port of Gothenburg, highlighted the project as a key step towards greener shipping by enabling shore-side power for container and car/RoRo ships.
