ACTOM Triples Transformer Manufacturing Capacity with New Facilities
ACTOM has significantly expanded its transformer manufacturing capacity through the acquisition of two production facilities in South Africa, tripling its previous output capability.
The company’s newest 40 000 m² manufacturing site, previously operated by SGB-SMIT Power Matla, has been upgraded to produce large Class 3 power transformers of up to 500 MVA. SGB-SMIT Power Matla entered business rescue in September 2023.
ACTOM has invested in new equipment and capabilities at the site, which also houses Africa’s only testing facility for transformers of this size, enabling local testing of large power transformers previously sent abroad.
Approximately 250 skilled employees were reappointed following the acquisition, after being on lay-off for more than a year.
In addition, ACTOM has acquired a 10 000 m² transformer manufacturing facility in Cape Town. Combined, the two sites triple the company’s previous distribution and power transformer manufacturing capacity.
According to ACTOM CEO Mervyn Naidoo, the expansion comes at a time of growing demand for electricity infrastructure across the continent. Africa’s population continues to grow, while an estimated 600 million people remain without reliable access to electricity.
ACTOM is Africa’s largest original-equipment manufacturer of transformers and supplies products for power generation, transmission, distribution and power conversion, supporting the full lifecycle from manufacturing and testing to repairs, services and system integration.
