ACTOM Delivers 130MVA Transformer for Northern Cape BESS Project
ACTOM Power Transformers (APT) has completed the on-time delivery of a 130MVA, 132/33kV power transformer for a large Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project in South Africa’s Northern Cape.
The transformer was designed, manufactured, tested, and installed locally, highlighting South Africa’s domestic engineering and manufacturing capacity at a time when grid resilience and energy storage are increasingly critical. The project forms part of broader efforts to strengthen grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy into the national power system.
The delivery supports a growing pipeline of BESS projects being rolled out across the country to address intermittency, improve energy reliability, and enhance transmission efficiency.
ACTOM Power Transformers manufactures transformers ranging from 2MVA to 315MVA, with voltage ratings of up to 275kV. Its products are supplied to utilities for generation, transmission, and distribution, as well as to the renewable energy, mining, industrial, data centre, and public infrastructure sectors.
The company is an accredited Eskom manufacturer with in-house design capability based in South Africa. The Northern Cape project reflects ongoing investment in locally produced electrical infrastructure aligned with the country’s evolving energy landscape.
