The Abia State Government, located in southeastern Nigeria, has commenced the distribution of 53 transformers to various communities across the state as part of its ongoing efforts to improve electricity supply under its power sector recovery program.

Speaking during the launch of the initiative in Umuahia, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, Mr. Ikechukwu Monday, stated that this distribution marks a significant milestone in the government's "Light Up Abia" vision.

"The transformers will be distributed to 53 communities, with the first phase addressing immediate electricity needs in densely populated and commercially significant areas," Monday said. He emphasized that the project aims to strengthen the state's electricity infrastructure through a phased approach to ensure fairness and sustained impact.

Communities were selected for the transformers based on criteria such as population density, commercial activities, security concerns, and application timeliness. The next batch of transformers is scheduled for January.

Monday urged recipients to safeguard the transformers against vandalism and energy theft, adding that all units would bear the government's logo for easy identification.

The Commissioner also noted collaborative efforts with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) and Aba Power Limited to address broader power challenges in the state.

"This initiative is part of the administration's commitment to delivering reliable power to Ndi Abia," he concluded.
