ABB wins $100m contract to strengthen South America’s power grid

15 Apr 2020

ABB's Power Grids has signed a five-year framework contract with South America's largest utilities company, Interconexion Electrica S.A. E.S.P. (ISA) to help manage electrical transmission and its critical equipment.

The contract valued at around $100 million includes the supply of shunt reactors, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS), and air-insulated switchgear (AIS) equipment such as circuit breakers, instrument transformers and hybrid modules.

Shunt reactors, which are based on the same technology as transformers, should ensure that the voltage stays within safe limits, avoiding possible blackouts, the manufacturer stated in the release.

As the largest transmission system operator in South America, ISA is responsible for serving millions of people and businesses with electricity. The company currently operates over 38,525 miles of power transmission infrastructure with over 4,350 kilometers more under construction.
