ABB Power Grids has signed a four-year framework contract worth more than $100 million with Italy's transmission system operator Terna to provide gas-insulated switchgear (GIS).

The contract includes the supply of a GIS solution that enables a significant reduction of equipment footprint to just one tenth of the space occupied by air-insulated switchgear substations.

Terna will utilize this advanced technology to strengthen Italy's grid with solutions that enable substations to be built within cities, located within buildings, underground and on rooftops.
