ABB to Supply Transformers for Singapore’s First Floating LNG Terminal
ABB has been awarded a contract by Hanwha Ocean to supply transformers and integrated electrical systems for Singapore's first floating liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal.
The Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU) will feature ABB medium-voltage transformers, generators, 6.6kV switchboards, and propulsion drives, along with advanced monitoring and protection systems. The transformers form the core of the facility's electrical backbone, ensuring reliable power delivery for regasification operations and propulsion.
Set to be delivered to Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) in 2027, the FSRU will be moored at Jurong Port and connected to Singapore's gas network in 2030 under a long-term charter with Singapore LNG Corporation Pte Ltd. With a capacity of 200,000 cubic meters, the terminal will increase Singapore's LNG import capacity by 50% compared to its current landside facility.
Rune Braastad, Global Business Line Manager, Marine Systems, ABB's Marine & Ports division, said the project highlights ABB's focus on transformer technology as a key enabler of safe, reliable, and efficient operations in floating LNG infrastructure.
The FSRU project is a strategic investment in Singapore's energy infrastructure and a vital step in the city-state's transition toward net-zero emissions.
