ABB to supply HVDC transformer technology to three 800 kV links in China

14 Apr 2020

ABB's Power Grids will supply HVDC converter transformers and high-voltage equipment for three 800 kV ultrahigh-voltage direct current (UHVDC) transmission links in China that will help integrate hydro, wind and solar power generation.

As part of the solution, the company will provide key technologies for efficient and reliable transmission and distribution of electricity over these long-distance links, including HVDC converter transformers, components such as wall bushings, capacitor banks, dead tank breakers and HVDC switches.

The three transmission projects, owned by the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), are among world's most powerful links, each able to transport up to 8,000 MW of electricity and meet the power needs of around eight million people in China.

The projects are the 1,056-mile Yazhong-Nanchang link, the 683,5-mile Shaanbei-Wuhan link, and the 932-mile Qinghai-Henan project.
