ABB’s transformer becomes new landmark of Ludvika

1 Nov 2019

LUDVIKA, SWEDEN - One of the world's largest and most advanced transformer projects, a 1,100 kV transformer for an HVDC project in China, was developed and built at ABB's plant in Ludvika, Sweden.

For the project, type-test transformers were also developed, built and tested in Ludvika.

However, the tanks were too large to send to the other side of the world. So, the local community decided to turn one of them into a landmark. And more than that.

Located at one the city's small squares, to serve the community, the transformer will contain batteries charged by solar panels to help restore power in case of a blackout, and to charge nearby electric cars.
