ABB provides technology for Finnish utility’ substation renewal project

8 Dec 2020
SAVONLINNA, FINLAND - The Finnish utility Parikkalan Valo has commissioned ABB to provide the centralized protection technology for a substation renewal project.

The manufacturer will provide a device that will enable the centralized protection of the Punkasalmi substation located about 21 miles from the town of Savonlinna in Finnish Lakeland.
The device has been researched and piloted at Finnish electricity distributor Caruna for about three years.
This solution enables the management of all substation protection and control functions via the same IEC 61850 protocol-compliant device, the manufacturer said in a press release.
Parikkalan Valo is planning to use the same technology in another substation renewal project in 2021.
In new installations, customers only need to install bay-level merging units in addition to the manufacturer's device. To ensure reliability, Parikkalan Valo is adding another device in the substation to gain full redundancy of the system.
