A significant step in the $80 million hydroelectric project in Timmins, Ontario was achieved on July 25 as a new high-voltage transformer, weighing 205,000 kilograms, was delivered to the Porcupine Transformer Station (TS) in Gold Centre. This initiative, led by Hydro One, aims to bolster the region's electricity infrastructure.

The project, which includes upgrading and replacing switches, system protection, and telecommunication equipment, is set for completion by 2026. According to Ryan Docherty, Vice President of Engineering and Construction Services at Hydro One, these improvements are crucial for supporting the growth of Northern Ontario communities.

The Timmins Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) George Pirie emphasized the project's importance for the Ring of Fire, a critical area for mining essential minerals, and stressed the necessity of reliable power for advancing local industries.

Timmins Mayor Michelle Boileau highlighted the infrastructure's role in unlocking the city's economic potential, ensuring a steady electricity supply for a growing population and business sector.

The recent transformer delivery is the second of three planned for the station, with the final unit expected to arrive in late 2025. These enhancements are expected to significantly improve the reliability and resiliency of the electricity network in Timmins and the surrounding areas.
