$78 Million Project to Enhance Power Reliability in Northern New Jersey

11 Jul 2024
Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L), a subsidiary of FirstEnergy, is embarking on a $78 million upgrade of its transmission substation in Morristown. The initiative is designed to mitigate the impact of power outages caused by flooding during hurricane season, benefiting 23,000 JCP&L customers in northern New Jersey.

As part of the project, equipment within the facility will be elevated above potential floodwaters to enhance service reliability. In addition, the exterior of the property will undergo a transformation with the addition of shade trees, ornamental trees, decorative pavers, and sculptural benches. A screening wall, which required a height variance from the town, will provide a visual barrier and heightened security for the substation equipment.

The Morristown substation serves as a crucial hub for local distribution, connecting with other substations in northern New Jersey. High-voltage lines at this facility supply power that is converted for distribution to neighborhood power lines.

The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.
