645-ton super load moves from Port Melbourne to Latrobe Valley’s Loy Yang B power station

5 Jun 2020

VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA - One of the heaviest loads ever moving on the Victoria's state roads, which is carrying a large power transformer, has begun making its way from the Port of Melbourne to Loy Yang in Victoria's Latrobe Valley.

The load contains a new A 340-tonne generator transformer to be used at Alinta Energy's Loy Yang B coal-fired power station, reports ABC NEWS.

The super load is 390 foot (119 meters) long, 19 foot (5.8 meters) wide, and weighs 645.7 ton including the weight of the trucks transporting the generator transformer.

There are three legs to the transformer's four-day journey from Port Melbourne to Loy Yang with the convoy travelling at night to minimize traffic disruption.

Once the transformer arrives at Loy Yang B, it will be filled with 110,000 liters of oil.

The new transformer will be kept on site at Loy Yang B as a useable spare and is suitable for use in both of Loy Yang B's units.

The transformer was built by Hyundai at its manufacturing facility in Ulsan, South Korea.
