50Hertz improves control of power flows in Hamburg area

15 Nov 2022

Hamburg, GERMANY - The installations are intended to improve control over the power flows in the greater Hamburg area.

50hertz has announced that in the Hamburg Ost substation, they put the first two of four phase-shifting transformers (PSTs) into trial operation. The installations are intended to improve control over the power flows in the greater Hamburg area, so that more green electricity can be integrated into the overall system. Moreover, they will contribute to greater system security next winter if individual lines are, for example, unavailable due to necessary maintenance.

According to 50hertz, Phase-shifting transformers are used to better control the power flows in transmission systems. They are mainly intended to distribute a load of individual lines so that more power can be transported through the grid.

"Now that the first two phase-shifting transformers are commissioned, we are making another contribution to the reinforcement of the transmission grid in the greater Hamburg area. The installations were placed at a location that is of strategic importance for grid control," said Stefan Kapferer, CEO of 50Hertz.
