500 kV transmission line connecting Minnesota to Manitoba under construction

Minnesota Power started construction of the 224-mile, 500-kV Great Northern Transmission Line that will connect Minnesota Power to Manitoba Hydro across the U.S.-Canadian border.



The project also includes construction of a new 500/230-kV substation in Iron Range, Blackberry Township, Minnesota.


The line will connect on the border near Roseau, Minnesota to the new substation.


When finished in 2020, the line will deliver up to 883 MW of hydropower to northern Minnesota.
