5 transformers shipped from Belgium to Savannah and Hueneme

15 Feb 2019

Royal Smit Transformers shipped five large power transformers from Zeebrugge, Belgium to the United States, using Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean (WW Ocean) roll-on/roll-off (ro-ro) vessels to transport the units to the ports of Savannah and Hueneme.

The first two units, measuring 23x10x15 feet and weighing 128 ton each, were shipped to Savannah, Tennessee on board a roll-on/roll-off vessel, before being delivered to a location at the Tennessee-Virginia border, reports Heavy Lift & PFI.

Three larger transformers, measuring 33x13x16.5 feet and weighing 185 ton each, were delivered to the port of Hueneme in California aboard another ro-ro ship Faust, before being moved to multiple locations in the state.

Once the transformers arrived at the destination ports, a combination of rail and road transport was used to reach the final destinations. "The last mile" of the journey required a lot of adjustments such as raising of power cables, removal of street furniture, or even trimming trees.
