300-Tonne Transformer Delivered to Ironbridge Substation, England
Traffic on the M54 near Telford was briefly halted on Sunday as a 300-tonne transformer was transported to the Ironbridge substation, located at the site of the former Ironbridge Power Station.
The move was carried out by Collett & Sons Ltd, a UK-based specialist in abnormal load logistics, with support from West Mercia Police. The transformer, measuring approximately 60 meters in length, was classified as an "abnormal load" under UK transport regulations, requiring police escort and route clearance.
The transport operation began on the A449 through Coven Heath, joining the M54 at Junction 2 around 1:45 p.m. The convoy traveled westbound to Junction 7, exiting the motorway and proceeding along the B5061 (Old A5) through Atcham, eventually reaching the Ironbridge site via Wroxeter and Buildwas.
Authorities had advised motorists of the potential for delays due to the vehicle's size and slow travel speed. The logistics effort was described as "carefully planned" to minimize disruption while ensuring safe passage for the oversized cargo.
The delivery is part of ongoing infrastructure upgrades to support power distribution and renewable energy integration in the region.
