250-Ton Transformer Delivered to Power Substation in Eastern Netherlands
A 250-ton 220,000-volt transformer has been successfully delivered to the Zwolle-Hessenweg high-voltage substation, located near Zwolle in the eastern Netherlands (Overijssel province). The overnight road transport from Zwartsluis, organized by TenneT Netherlands, took seven hours and involved meticulous logistical and engineering planning.
The route included tight rural corridors, a viaduct over the A28 motorway, and a railway crossing--all of which required detailed structural assessments to support the 250,000-kilo load. A specialized convoy and a team of around 20 professionals managed the move with minimal traffic disruption.
Mark de Weerd, communications advisor at TenneT, stated, "Along the way, we had to deal with challenges such as the viaduct of the A28 and the railway crossing at Zwolle. But everything went according to plan."
This delivery is the first of two planned for the substation. Once both transformers are installed, they will significantly enhance grid reliability and capacity in the region--supporting increased electricity demand driven by the energy transition and urban development.
Such heavy-lift operations are essential to modernizing the Netherlands' electricity infrastructure, even if they often go unseen by the public.
