245-ton transformer transported by road and rail from Offenburg to Halle

19 May 2021

GERMANY -- A 245-ton transformer was transported from the TransnetBW's Weier substation by Kübler Spedition to a destination site in Halle.

The unit was removed from electricity network operator TransnetBW's Weier substation. It was transported by road to the Offenburg marshalling yard at 20 km/h. From there it continued the approximately 275-mile journey by train to Halle / Saale.

"The road transport had 20 axles and 45 meters in length," reports David Moser, press spokesman for TransnetBW. The 220 kV converter is checked in Saxony-Anhalt and, if necessary, refurbished.

Route studies and other preparatory works were carried out before transporting the unit. "Planning takes around a quarter of a year if - as in this case - it is also possible to use the rails with a heavy load," said Thorge Clever, coordinator for heavy haulage at Kübler Spedition.

The transport was documented by the railway historian and electricity expert Thomas Gries.
