21 New Contracts Signed in Romania: Massive Investments in Power Transformers Announced

19 Feb 2024

Romania's Ministry of Energy has recently announced the signing of 21 financing contracts under the Modernisation Fund's Key Programme 3. Valued at over RON 3.2 billion, these contracts mark a significant milestone in the country's energy infrastructure development, equivalent to USD 693 million. With a substantial portion of state aid granted from the Modernisation Fund, these investments are set to propel the extension and modernization of the electricity distribution network.

These contracts, signed with all concessionaire electricity distributors, bring the total number of secured projects to 38, amounting to approximately 639 million USD (RON 2.95 billion) in state aid. Minister of Energy, Sebastian Burduja, emphasized the importance of these investments in Romania's progress, highlighting the Modernisation Fund as one of the nation's most significant development opportunities.

The focus of these investments lies in modernizing electricity distribution networks to enhance resilience against climate change, facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, modernize transformer stations and digitize networks through the introduction of smart meters. Crucially, these projects are financed through non-reimbursable funds from the Modernisation Fund, alleviating pressure on distribution tariffs and ensuring high-quality, reliable service for consumers.

The impact of these initiatives extends beyond immediate infrastructure upgrades, signaling a shift towards a new energy system model in Romania. Described as a "3D system" - decarbonised, digitised, and decentralised - these investments lay the groundwork for a sustainable and efficient energy future. With a strategic focus on enhancing safety, capacity, and efficiency, these projects are poised to transform Romania's energy landscape for years to come.
