205 Tonne Transformer Transported from Rotterdam to North Yorkshire
A 205 Tonne Kolektor transformer has been transported from Rotterdam to Statkraft’s Thornton Greener Grid Park in North Yorkshire by Collett & Sons Ltd. The transformer, delivered in September 2025, measured 9.9 metres long, 3.6 metres wide, and 4.2 metres high.
The operation involved abnormal load road transport, vessel roll-off operations, and on-site hydraulic jacking and skidding to position the transformer at the substation. At the Port of Rotterdam, the transformer was loaded onto a 550 Tonne Scheuerle girder frame trailer using twin port cranes, before shipment to the UK.
On arrival at Hull’s Albert Dock, a ramp system was used to manage a section of quay that could not support the loaded vehicle. The 30-mile route to Thornton Greener Grid Park required detailed planning, including route surveys, structural assessments, and coordination with Humberside Police, Hull City Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and specialist contractors.
The road convoy measured 66.4 metres in total and followed strict operational and safety protocols. At Thornton Greener Grid Park, a 27-metre skid track allowed the transformer to be rotated and positioned on its final plinth.
All transport and installation activities were completed without incident, ensuring the transformer was delivered and installed according to schedule.
