190-ton transformer transported across Germany to Switzerland

27 Aug 2019

A 190-ton transformer manufactured by ABB has been transported from Germany to Switzerland, moving from roads, to boats, railroads and finally into the Swiss mountains, in just 16 days.

The transformer started its journey in Bad Honnef where its 65-mile drive began on German roads. Then, the transformer had to be moved from the roads onto a boat to cross the River Rhine.

Next, the transformer was moved from the boat onto a train, and then back again onto a flatbed truck where it took narrow and winding country roads to make its way up the Swiss mountains.

Arriving near its destination, the transformer was then moved underground, to the funicular railroad that passes under the mountains.

Finally, it was lowered into its final position, 219 yards down into the caverns of its installation site.
