155-Tonne Transformer Transported to UK National Grid
UK-based logistics company Robert Wynn & Sons has successfully transported a 155-tonne transformer from Rotterdam to the Uskmouth substation in Newport, UK, supporting the National Grid.
The heavy-lift operation utilized the company's ro-ro barge Terra Marique, on behalf of Antwerp Metal Logistics (AML). The transformer was first moved from Rhenus Logistics' deepsea terminal in Rotterdam and then called at Associated British Ports' (ABP) Newport north dock. There, an eight-axle SPMT from Allelys was positioned to prepare the cargo for offloading at the substation.
Due to the limited tidal window at Uskmouth, this preparatory step allowed the transformer to be discharged efficiently in under 20 minutes, just 300 meters from its final destination.
The project also carried historical significance: Newport is the registered port of Terra Marique and the founding location of Robert Wynn & Sons, which has been operating for over 160 years.
This operation highlights the expertise and precision required in transporting heavy electrical infrastructure for critical national energy networks.
