140MVA Wilson Transformer Powers Iron Acton BESS
Wilson Power Solutions has supplied, installed and tested a 110/125/140MVA 132/33kV power transformer for the Iron Acton Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in South Gloucestershire, near Bristol.
Owned by Constantine Energy Storage (CES), the 120MW/360MWh BESS connects to the national transmission network at the adjacent Iron Acton 132kV Grid Supply Point, where around 120MW of solar and wind generation is already connected.
The Wilson Power Transformer links the site's 33kV system to the 132kV network and incorporates an on-load tap changer for voltage regulation as battery output varies. The unit is a Continuous Rating Transformer (CMR), capable of operating continuously at up to 140MVA without exceeding its temperature limits.
Wilson Power Solutions also supplied three 1700kVA 33kV/415V Wilson T2 Ecotrans® distribution transformers. Each was filled with FR3 natural ester fluid, a renewable and biodegradable alternative to mineral oil, and supplied with 110% steel bunding for enhanced fire safety.
The project builds on Wilson Power Solutions' previous work at the site, including the power transformer supplied for the neighbouring solar farm.
