139-Tonne Transformer Delivered to Ironbridge Substation

A 139-tonne Hyosung transformer has been successfully delivered to Ironbridge Substation in Shropshire, marking a key milestone in regional power infrastructure upgrades. The complex transport operation involved moving the oversized transformer from Ellesmere Port over 110 miles on a newly refurbished 150 tonne girder frame trailer operated by Collett & Sons.

 

The transformer, measuring 7.75m long, 4.4m wide, and 4.5m high, was unloaded at Ellesmere Port using a Leibherr LTM 1800(D) crane and secured for onward transport.

The 110-mile route combined motorway stretches with technically challenging local roads featuring narrow lanes, tight turns, and restricted clearances. Detailed route surveys and swept path analyses were conducted by Collett's Projects and Consulting team, ensuring the safe navigation of the 61-metre-long convoy.

Support from West Mercia police escorts and Collett's in-house escort fleet enabled smooth coordination with local authorities throughout the journey.

Ironbridge Substation, part of the redevelopment of the former Ironbridge Power Station site, plays a key role in regional power distribution upgrades, making the transformer delivery critical to the project's success.

This operation marked the first use of Collett & Sons' newly refurbished 150 tonne girder frame trailer, complementing their existing heavy transport fleet and enhancing their capabilities in power infrastructure logistics.
