110-Ton Siemens Energy Transformer Completes Complex Journey to London Docklands
A 160MVA 132kV/33kV transformer has been successfully delivered to the London Docklands substation site, marking a key milestone in the project’s development.
The 110-tonne unit was transported overnight from Tilbury Dock to South East London in a complex abnormal load operation. The delivery involved more than 20 miles of escorted transport along the A13, following a carefully planned route designed to minimise disruption to the local road network and surrounding community.
The logistics operation required extensive preparation, including detailed route assessments, bridge load evaluations, and coordinated out-of-hours movement to ensure safe delivery of the high-voltage equipment.
This delivery represents the first of three major transformer installations planned for the site. The project team indicated that further updates will be shared as additional equipment is transported and installed in the coming phases.
Commenting on the milestone, Doug Cook, Managing Director of the Power Division at Freedom, praised the collaboration involved in executing the operation. He highlighted the coordinated effort between project teams, Siemens Energy UK, and specialist haulage partner Allelys, noting the importance of precise planning in delivering large-scale grid infrastructure components.
The successful transport marks an important step forward in the ongoing development of the London Docklands substation, which forms part of wider efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure in the region.
